Not many games left in the season and the Amherstburg Admirals trail the Mooretown Flags by five points for sixth place. Tonight they host the Wheatley Sharks in what could be a preview of a first round playoff matchup. A win tonight would put the Admirals just three points behind the Flags, with two games in hand.

Amherstburg has struggled against the Sharks this season, going 1-2-1-0  while being outscored 19-9. While those numbers are a little bit alarming, a win tonight could go along way to getting some confidence going into the playoffs if we happen to face this Wheatley team.

Arren Romeril will get the nod in goal for the Admirals while Conner MacKinnon will be in net for the Sharks. MacKinnon is 15-9-0-1 with a 3.51 GAA and .891 save percentage. Up front Jon Woelk has been their offensive catalyst all season long and shutting him down will be a priority for the Admirals tonight.

Let’s take a look at tonight’s roster!

2) Cody Leeming
3) Tyler Lawrence
4) Mark Sobocan

Let’s go Admirals!

20:00: The Admirals will start the game shorthanded with a delay of game penalty. Ugh.

17:12: After serving the penalty, Lawrence comes out of the box and gets a great chance. Sitting in the booth it looked like it was in, apparently it hit the outside of the net.

15:54: 1-0 Admirals
A great start for the Admirals! Leeming does well to keep the puck deep and then Matoski feeds a wide open Sobocan out front. He makes no mistake putting it past MacKinnon. Couldn’t have asked for a better opening five minutes.

12:46: A couple of chances for Wheatley but Romeril makes his first good sequence of saves tonight.

10:49: Wheatley pushing back a bit now, Admirals are forced to ice the puck a few times in a row.

8:35: After a great start to the game, the Admirals are having trouble getting any sustained pressure. They’re doing a good job of keeping Wheatley to the outside though.

7:35: Sobocan and Matoski with a glorious two-on-one chance but MacKinnon comes up with a huge save.

7:14: More pressure for the Admirals. That’s more like it. Rennie’s point shot gets stopped then a mad scramble forces MacKinnon to scramble and keep it out.

6:52: All the pressure ends with an Amherstburg penalty. Sobocan gets two for high-sticking.

4:55: Copeland lays out and makes a HUGE shot block, bounces right back up and gets a breakaway. His shot hits the post but he draws a penalty. Admirals power play coming up. What a play by Copeland.

2:33: Power play creates some chances but can’t convert. Rennie plays a one-on-one perfectly and Romeril covers up the loose puck.

1:21: Some great work by Matoski forces Woelk to take a penalty. Admirals will get their second power play of the evening.

19:11: After the penalty expires, Wheatley jumps on an odd-man rush. Romeril comes up with a big save using his head.

18:56: Luciw blocks the point shot and it leads to another Admirals breakaway. MacKinnon comes up big again.

16:23: 1-1 Tie
After some good pressure by the Sharks, Romeril makes the save on Bowman’s shot but, Thompson is there to tap in the rebound. The Admirals collapsed to the slot but nobody picked up a wide open Thompson.

16:04: Liboiron hits an Admirals forward from behind. He gets two for boarding and the Admirals have a great chance to take back the lead.

15:01: MacKinnon with two big saves on Sobocan and Gangnon. Sobocan is flying tonight. He looks dangerous every time he touches the puck.

14:11: 2-1Admirals
The Admirals cash in on the power play. Copeland redirects a slap pass from Jones. No chance for MacKinnon on that one. Nice goal.

14:04: 2-2 Tie
Right off the draw Zsebok walks over the blueline and beats Romeril with a shot. It looked like he was screened. All tied up again. Crazy.

13:24: More pressure from Wheatley and that shot clangs the iron. Close call.

12:22: Copeland has played really well tonight. Strips the Wheatley defenceman of the puck and it almost leads to a goal.

11:41: Wow, three or four big saves for Romeril on golden opportunities. Standing on his head right now.

10:59: Rutckyj gets tripped up by Bowman. Another power play goal here would be nice.

9:52: Crashing the net, Florence runs into Romeril. Prymack takes exception and gives him a shot. Prymack gets the only penalty and an extra ten minute misconduct. We’ll play a little four-on-four.

7:11: 3-2 Admirals
Beattie walks in and beats MacKinnon from a sharp angle. That wasn’t pretty, but it counts. MacKinnon will want that one back.

5:35: Some rough stuff after the whistle. This game is starting to get a bit chippy. I don’t think the Admirals like how hard the Sharks are crashing the net.

3:18: 3-3 Tie
Some good work down low by the Wheatley forecheck and Florence ends up tipping the shot from the half-wall to tie this game up. Back and forth we go.

0:15: A couple of attempted stretch passes by the Admirals JUST miss their targets.

18:34: Brown’s point shot gets tipped out front by Laframboise. That didn’t miss by much.

18:10: Morand gets his hands a little too high and he’ll sit for roughing. Admirals need a big penalty kill here.

16:10: Lots of zone time for the Wheatley power play, but the Admirals do well to keep everything to the outside. That was an important PK.

13:06: Phibbs with a nice end-to-end rush, but Romeril makes the save to keep the game tied.

11:56: 4-3 Admirals
Sobocan gains the zone and finds Matoski, who feeds a wide open Rutckyj. Rutckyj absolutely wires a cannon by MacKinnon. This line has been tremendous all night.,

10:29: Another Admirals penalty, this time Beattie for roughing. Once again, a huge penalty kill is needed here.

8:29: Another big kill for the Admirals, thanks in large part to great work from Sobocan and Gangnon.

7:40: A big takeaway by Brown at the blueline. That would’ve been a three-on-one if he didn’t make that play.

6:53: I cannot put that Romeril save into words. I just can’t. My mind is absolutely blown.

3:42: Another big save for Romeril. Wow. His lateral movement is really, really good.

3:18: Admirals back the other way and Carter rings one off the post.

0:14: A late push by Wheatley and they get a good chance, but Romeril stands tall. Just over a dozen seconds left. Here we go.

That’s a BIG win! Great defensive play in the third period to thwart the attempted comeback by the Sharks. What a game! Thanks for reading folks!
