It’s been a while since I’ve been in town for a home game, so let’s hope I remember how to do one of these game blog things. I think I’ll be able to pick up on it again pretty quickly.
The Admirals earned a big two points Friday night in Dresden thanks to shootout goals from Kyler Carter, Mark Sobocan and Luke Gangnon. Arren Romeril earned his 14th win of the season, third as an Admiral, by stopping 31 of 34 shots. He’ll get the start again tonight against his former team, the Essex 73’s.
The 73’s are on a bit of a cold stretch, going 3-2-0-0 in their last five games. Corey Beaulieu still leads the team, and the league, in points with 49 and he’ll be the player to watch tonight. Darien Ekblad gets the start for Essex. He boasts a 4-0-0-0 record with a 1.64 GAA and .924 save percentage. Goals will be hard to come by tonight for the Admirals, but they have played the 73’s tight this season despite being winless in the season series.
Casey Basile will make his debut tonight for the Amerstburg Admirals. I loved this kid in training camp. He can fly on the ice.
Let’s take a look at the entire roster for tonight’s game!

Let’s go Admirals!
16:38: Not many chances for either team so far. Seems like there’s a bit of a feeling out process going on here.
16:33: Rennie gets called for hooking and the 73’s will get their first power play of the game.
14:56: Great PK by the Admirals so far. Thwarting every 73’s rush into the zone. Good sign.
13:15: The best chances on that Essex power play belonged to the Admirals. A couple of decent shorthanded chances.
11:40: Lots of possession for Essex, but the Admirals are doing well to keep everything to the outside. No real grade A chances for the 73’s.
9:21: Matoski feeds Carter with a beautiful pass right on the doorstep but Ekblad reacts quickly to make the save. By far the best chance of the game for either team.
8:30: Great shoft by Gangnon-Sobocan-Gagnon. Lots of pressure and a couple of good scoring chances. And gross stickhandling by Sobocan. Gross in a good way obviously.
6:46: More pressure from the Admirals, Rutckyj nearly beat Ekblad with a quick shot. Essex forced to ice the puck.
3:10: Carter springs Rutckyj on a breakaway with a beautiful behind-the-back pass. Rutckyj tries to go over Ekblad’s shoulder but his shot goes over the net. What a chance that was.
1:09: Beattie gets tangled up with Hedrick and a bit of a scrum ensues. Beattie gets the only penalty. Two minutes for holding.
17:51: Amherstburg having a bit of a tough start to this period. Having trouble breaking out of their zone. Good forecheck from Essex.
15:44: Michael Popel just drills Hamilton from behind into the boards. That looked really ugly. Popel’s game is done. Hoping Hamilton is alright. He’s being helped to the bench but looks like he’s standing under his own power. Good to see. Popel gets five and a game. Huge opportunity for the Admirals to capitalize here.
15:20: Bealieu gets a shorthanded chance but Romeril is equal to the task.
13:20: Lots of good puck movement but Ekblad has stopped everything he’s faced on this power play.
11:59: Another shorthanded chance for Essex but Romeril denies both Garon and Beaulieu.
8:58: The linesman went down in a heap and after a couple minutes without a whistle, he finally gets a chance to get off the ice. He left his arm dangling. Looked like a shoulder injury. Let’s hope he’s alright.
7:26: Bromley whacks the stick out of Gangnon’s hands. He’ll get called for slashing, but he probably saved a goal. Admirals back on the power play.
6:23: Right off the faceoff an Essex point shot gets tipped. Romeril with a huge save.
6:03: 1-0 Admirals
Finally the Admirals convert on the power play. Mark Sobocan finishes off a Luciw pass. That’s a big goal. Looked like Sobocan beat Ekblad five-hole and the crowd is loving it.
5:58: Gangnon gets taken down off the draw and once again the Admirals will get a chance on the power play. A goal here would be huge to say the least.
3:48: A shot from Sobocan goes just wide but the bounce off the boards nearly goes off Ekblad and in.
3:17: Romeril with a few big saves to preserve the lead, including a great post-to-post stop on a cross-crease pass.
0:23: Prymack takes exception to an Essex player taking a late whack at Romeril’s glove. He’ll get the only penalty. The Admirals will need a big PK on this one.
15:41: Cruising along in the third period. Janikowski takes a roughing penalty and the Admirals will have a chance to add to their lead.
15:54: Hebert gives Prymack a rough ride. Prymack didn’t look too pleased about that one.
14:01: Time keeps ticking away and the Admirals are refusing to give up the puck. Dominating possession this period.
11:24: Starting to get really physical out there. These two teams aren’t fond of each other.
9:10: All Essex the past few minutes. Admirals need to tighten up, can’t give the 73’s too many chances or they’ll capitalize eventually.
8:07: Pereira gets called for cross-checking and the Admirals will get another power play. A goal here could potentially ice this one. Need to generate some good chances.
7:44: Behind the net, Ekblad goes down and Matoski gets called for goaltender interference. Matoski claiming Ekblad went down a little too easily, but it’s a penalty nonetheless.
7:23: Admirals back on the power play. Garon hauls down Gangnon on a partial breakaway and he gets called for hooking. We’ll play four-on-three here.
7:07: It’s a penalty parade. Rutckyj gets four minutes for high-sticking. It will be some rare three-on-three hockey. Cool.
6:17: Beattie for holding. This is getting a little crazy now.
4:14: Romeril keeping the door shut. What a save on the rebound after he stopped the point shot. He’s in the zone right now. 28 saves so far.
3:51: 1-1 Tie
Finally the Essex power play finds a way to beat Romeril. It looked like the point shot was tipped and the rebound was right there for Jordan Ryan. Tough break after the penalty kill was playing so good.
3:08: 2-1 73’s
Some slick passing by the 73’s and Slipchuk was wide open at the side of the net and converts the pass from Garon. The tides have turned quickly here.
0:41: Morand’s point shot gets redirected from Gangnon and it hits the post. You could hear the entire building gasp. So close.
The Admirals had the lead for most of the game, but Essex went ahead when it counted. Oh so close to finally beating these pesky 73’s but the Admirals just couldn’t hold on. They played well against the best team in the league though, nothing to be ashamed of. Thanks for reading folks.
