Two goals from Luke Gangnon, including the game winning goal in the second period, were enough to see the Amherstburg Admirals top the Wallaceburg Lakers 4-1 at the UCCU complex.
The Admirals opened the scoring midway through the first period when Blake Rutckyj bounced a shot off of Lakers goaltender Ben Vankessel’s back. Less than four minutes later, Vankessel withstood a barrage of Admirals shots before Justin Whitson drew the Lakers even with a shot off the rush that beat Klinton Kenney.
It would take another half of a period before the Admirals would solve Vankessel again, despite controlling most of the play, when Gangnon converted a pass from Dan Matoski and made no mistake wiring the shot over Vankessel’s shoulder. Gangnon scored his second of the game at 18:12 by finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing play on the power play.
Conor Rennie finished off the scoring, beating Vankessel by tipping a Cody Leeming point shot. The Admirals would go into defensive mode for the rest of the game and hold on to get a big two points, moving within one of the sixth place Mooretown Flags.
The Admirals will travel to Dresden tomorrow to take on the Kings. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.
