Goals from four different players led the Amherstburg Admirals to a 4-3 victory over the second place Wheatley Sharks Sunday night at the UCCU Complex.
The Admirals opened the scoring 4:06 into the first period when Dan Matoski found Mark Sobocan (1 G, 1 A) wide open in the slot and he beat Conner MacKinnon with a quick one-timer.
The second period saw a flurry of goals by both teams. Austin Thompson beat Admirals goalie Arren Romeril with a deflection on the doorstep to tie the game for Wheatley at 3:37. The tie wouldn’t last long as Chad Copeland redirected a pass from Ryan Jones on the power play to give the Admirals a 2-1 lead. Wheatley answered back just seven seconds later when Ryan Zsebok beat Romeril with a quick shot off a rush up the wing to tie the game 2-2.
Brett Beattie of the Admirals and Scott Florence of the Sharks exchanged goals late in the second to set up an exciting third period.
At 8:04 of the final frame, Matosky and Sobocan combined again to set up Blake Rutckyj who beat MacKinnon for what would be the eventual game winning goal.
Some huge saves by Romeril during the Sharks late push sealed the win for the Amherstburg Admirals, who are now three points back of the Mooretown Flags for sixth place.
